I have a 1010 JD and it is missing the serial # plate. Is there anyway to tell for sure when it was made?

Most of those Dubuques including the 1010 have an engine serial # also. If you think the block is original, you can get that number, go through your dealer filling out the paper work and can then get a duplicate tag. It does not look original but then you would have a tag. Do an info search on here. That question has been asked before.

You can tell with in a couple of years by the gear shift. If it is on the dash, it is a 61 or 62. If it is on the floor like a 430, it is a 63 64 or 65.

It is in the floor. 5 speed also the oil filter is the old canister type where you take it apart and replace the element if that helps and it has a Zineth carb. Is there anything else? Right now it looks like a 63

I would bet money it is a 1963 model. Mine is a '64 and it has the spin on oil filer. I think '63 is the last year JD put the canister type filter on the 1010.

I have a 1963(by the two sn lists I have found) and it has the spin on oil filter. Looks like it was never changed over.

Don't know that answer, but from what I read here, it seems pretty certain you can rest assured that it was stolen at one time or another. Those plates don't come off by accident. They are located on the right side of the engine at the back of the generator, so you would have to pretty much tear up the tractor to "accidentally" knock one off.

There is ONE good reason for those plates to be missing. A trip through the hot tank at a machine shop will remove them, and someone may even have taken it off, and set it aside, to keep it out of the hot tank, only to misplace it, and never put it back on.

Some years ago, I had removed a plate from a Massey engine before it was hot tanked, and set it aside, 'til I found new rivets for it, and then the shop burned down. Only the plate was lost, as the tractor was in a separate building.

So, not ALL "missing plate" tractors have been stolen!
