I have a JD 51 A that was just overhauled, and I am getting oil up though the govener, then thought the fan shaft vent tube; that leads up to the air breather before the carb. It also has a breather that leads to the top of the valve cover. Would like to know if any of you know why this is happening. Thanks Jerry.

It will be your vent pump, I had tthe same problem. You will find it at the rear of the fan shaft tube. Pull the tube and you will find a vane which is loaded with two little springs, one or both of these springs will be broken. I replaced these springs and the oil problem was gone. Hope this helps and if you have questions dont hesitate to ask. ----Harold

Jerry:

I suspect that you have an inoperative vent pump that is located at the base of the fan shaft. The vent pump is supposed to pull in clean air from the oil bath air cleaner pipe, pull it down the fanshaft and into the governor, which pressurizes the crankcase so that the vapors and moisture exit through the valve cover pipe and are directed into the carburetor entry for re-burning.

Try removing the oil filler cap on the right side near the pulley. This should relieve any blow-by and reduce or eliminate the oil from moving quickly up the fanshaft. If this does the trick, you're facing a fanshaft ventilator pump rebuild.

It's a pretty typical failure.

Frank
