Clutch job turned out great. Thanks to the guys who answered my questions. One more, I took the valve cover off to set the valves, got the gasket surfaces perfectly clean. I've seen this job done before, I set the valve cover upside down in the vise, coated the flange with silicone, stuck the gasket to it, and used the screws to align the gasket to the cover. I left it sit like that for about 20 minutes, set it on the head, and tightened the screws as tight as I could with a nut driver. This resulted in oil seeping from the front right corner after a day hauling chopper boxes. I then tightened the screws evenly to 25 in-lbs, as I could not find a torque spec and didn't want to overtighten them. I still have a small seep. Any advice on getting it sealed?

As the others have said, stay away from RTV and make sure the surface is flat, particularly around the holes. Also, always replace the screws with new. I give them a pretty good snugging with a 3/8 ratchet, but I never use "cement" or weatherstrip adhesive anymore. Too many experiences trying to chisel glued-on gaskets off of covers, the front of blocks were the water pump mounts, oil pans and so forth. Spray Hi-Tack is plenty sticky to keep those gaskets in place. I've sealed dozens of valve covers with it.

i agree with the last post. i put the rtv on the gasket and valve cover and just let it sit long enough to hold the gasket in place while i put it on and then don't overtighten the screws. after i run it a short while i retighten the screws. i use a die grinder with a small wire brush on it to clean the surfaces real good. be sure and wear safety goggles when using a wire brush on anything.

Stick the gasket to the valve cover with contact cement.

Then, put a thin layer of silicone on the cylinder head side of the gasket. LIGHTLY snug down the screws. Then, after the silicone has cured at least overnight, snug the screws down a liitle more].

I"m with Bob. I very seldom use silicone on a valve cover gasket unless it is a temporary thing. Silicone can make these gaskets slide around if you are not careful. I always use 3M Weatherstrip glue and it works very well. I will use a VERY small amount of silicone on the opposite side of the gasket sometimes but often just coat the gasket with some gun grease to soften it. I install the cover and then retorque later after the gasket has "set". Mike

I always use the weatherstrip adhesive on valve covers also. I never have any trouble with the gasket squeasing out of place a few years down the road. I glue the gasket to the cover and leave the other side dry. If the cover isn't distorted it won't leak.

On your 3020 valve cover gasket, either install it dry (making sure it is in place all the way around) or put a thin layer of silicone on the valve cover, stick the gasket to it, place it, gasket down, on a very flat surface, put weight on it, and let the silicone fully cure (24 hrs) then install the valve cover. This later method is what we use in our shop with 100% success.

Did you peen the holes back down on the cover. If they are overtightened the holes get bent out of flat .Then you can't tighten them enough.Torque sounds about right, but I would install the cover immediately before the RTV sets up to eliminate any hardened high spots.
