This morning I started the thing up and the temperature guage did not move after running for a while (should have been to op. temp. by then). I shut it off, the hoses around the engine (heater, etc.) were very hot to touch/have water in them. The radiator was pretty much cold. I left it sit a couple hours in direct sun, 90+, I checked the guage and it was up a little, just below 150. I started it for a while, the guage did not move for a few minutes, then the guage went down, radiator still cold, hoses warm (big bottom hose to radiator cold). If the guage registered a little warm when it was sitting, I would think the guage is working a little at least, but if the hoses/engine were hot, and the guage was cold, as well as the radiator, I think I have a problem. If the thermostat were stuck closed, the guage should register warm, and if it were open, the water in the radiator should be a little warm, I"d think. What"s it sound like, where do I start?

If the temp gauge is on the rad side of the thermostat. Your deduction of a stuck closed thermostat has a 99% chance of being accurate.

The guage is on the opposite side of the engine as the radiator, in the top of the engine. It stays on the cool side, and it does move a little like I mentioned when in the sun for a couple, but as the tractor ran and the hoses get hot (engine exterior where the guage is screwed in too), it goes DOWN. Haven"t gotten around to taking anything apart to see what"s going on, but there is definitely water in the hoses, and they definitely get hot/not near enough to the engine to be warmed by it (so I"d think water was flowing. Day before it was normal.

Only thing I can think is if the gauge and the thermostat would have quit at the exact same time. Guess I"ll get to it later today if nothing else turns up.
