Have a 16 year old neighbor kid who is attempting to restore his grandfather's old JD-B.....think 1956 model, but not certain..... and he is missing the piece of sheetmetal between the steering column and the hood and which covers the battery. I have taken him to the local boneyard, but have not been successful in finding this particular piece. My guess is that they are not easily found due to damage by the battery. Does anyone know a source for a replacement or have a pattern that could be used to fabricate one in his sheet metal class at school. This is a decent kid who just needs a little assistance with a worth while project. Thanks in advance!

This is considered an "early" styled "B" ,'46 or earlier.I believe '39 was the first. 1952 was last year for "Bs" If you ask for batt. cover most people will instantly refer you to the late styled B under the seat cussion.Try to get the S/N or maybe even some casting numbers to determine year before going any farther. By the way, tell that 16 yr. old to not get discouraged and that "B" will look like new in due time. We need a few more KIDS like him in this world.Help him all you can and don't be a stranger to this forum or the body and paint forum when he gets that far. Good luck to both of you!!

does it have a tag on it? its located on the right hand side of the tractor just forward of the clutch. if he'll post it somebody can tell him what year it is. he'll need to get it pretty close to get some parts for it. i hope you'll encourage him with the project a lot. theres not a lot of younger people in this hobby, so if he neds any more help and you don't know just ask here. everybody here is great to help out, especially to kids.

Thanks for the info! I'll pass this along to the neighbor kid. The battery cover on his tractor is part of the hood, so looks like his manufacture dates are a bit off. Thanks again for the response.
