Just found this group and I already have a question. My JD 1520 has a moderately loud to loud metallic clunking sound coming from the transmission area when under load. It is most noticable when starting out in a higher gear. Last weekend I checked it out a little more thoroughly and you can also duplicate the sound by idling the motor and engage the hydraulics of the front end loader in nuetral, transmission in "P". I also noticed the mid-pto engages easily while the rear produces gear grinding sounds when you attempt to engage it. Do I have a bad input bearing on the pto or other input shaft?

Check your hyd filter and suction screen if you find a lot of fileings you have a internal problem . Those tractors idled real rough anyway make sure the idle is at least 800 rpm this can amplify normal noise. Lugging the tractor will do the same thing.
