JD Plow on 4020 diesel?

I have pulled my neighbors 3 16 oliver trailer type plow. It handled that just fine, but there were a few places where things were a bit tricky. In this neck of the woods I will be plowing mainly older grass/ hay fields...haven't been plowed in 10 - 20 years. These fields generally have small popel trees encroaching with runner roots out into the field as well as getting into low areas also with willows trying to encroach. I had to put diff lock on a couple of times with the 3 bottom even and I have fluid in the tires. (4020 diesel)

Anyway I have been looking for a jd 4 - 16. There is a fellow posting a 4-14 that is tempting but that only gives a larger cut pass by 8 inches over the 3 16 oliver. But I would think the smaller rollover furrows would be easier to disc. So wondering what you guys think about which way to go is better. Also wondering what you like better...a trailer type plow or a semi mount. I wont be plowing alot but occasionaly and typically 3 acres to 100 acres.

Thanks,
John

Great info again guys. Thanks! Gerald..good info on the diff lock and the side to side action. So often the fields up here are far from square. Popple grows like weeds and often feilds get pretty weird. I will lock in on all the straight runs now though.

Farmerboy, I am up in northern Minnesota so probably not too far away. I will be going through Duluth and accross the U.P. sometime this summer and doing a job on the michigan wisc border against Lake Michigan. Marinette. So will be going on 2. I will also be down in the cities once this summer also for a job.

Thanks for the tips on the plow models too. I think a 4 16 is what I will shoot for. I don't want to have the wheels up front light and don't want to wear weights...hmmm although I just did the math and 4 16's have 10 more inches than 3 18's.

The newer the plow and the bigger the bottom, the better the plow will clear trash. Dad had a 14 inch F145 he hated so bad that he traded it for a Glencoe chisel plow in the early 80's and hasn't owned a plow since. I don't know if he didn't have it set right or if it just wasn't a good plow.

I've used my father-in-laws 5-16 F145 behind a 4430 and it seems to clear trash OK. a 4-16 or 18 would be about perfect for your 4020. How far away are you from WI? I have a 4-16 345 sitting in the weeds. I've been saying for a couple years that it's going for scrap but haven't had the heart.

I think as long as you have the plow set right, it doesn't make a difference whether the plow is 14 16 or 18 inch bottoms when it comes to disking.

Using the differential lock makes it a lot easier to drive straight, I used it every furrow the last time I plowed with my 4020. I have an AC 3x18 that was more plow than I could pull when it was 4x18 and keep the front wheels on the ground the way it was hitched and in 3rd gear. 3x18 I pulled in 5th gear and unless the ground was really wet, the furrow turned over quickly and smashed smoothly.

Disking without the differential locked, I found the 4020 would bounce side to side, broke off the muffler that way. It only bounces up and down with the differential locked which is a lot easier on the tractor and me.

Just touch a brake pedal to turn off the differential lock.

Forgot to mention that I do plow in glacial outwash sand but 90% will be in a pretty heavy Clay/silt...glacial till and fairly established grass roots.

I would recommend an F145 4X16 especially if you can find one with "NU" moldboards. These will work well at any speed between 4 & 7 MPH. I have one that I've not used in a few years, but keep to repair waterways etc. I pull it with a Turbocharged 4010 (110 HP), and just "run" with it, usually in 5th gear (6 1/2 mph) & I have some very heavy Clarion-Webster silt loam that pulls quite hard. There is a lot of difference in how hard various soils pull when plowing,- you could probably pull 5-16s in a lower gear, but traction would most likley become a problem.

I'm working on a John Deere trailer plow from the early 60's, and I see I can get HS moldboards, or the NU you mention. Do you know what speed or conditions the HS would be good for? Everyone in my family used Oliver plows and don't know much about the John Deere's.

the plow that we have an that i like best is the F145 semi mount. we pull 5-16 with our 4020's. it was a load in some places but over all handled them nicely. but you would like a F145 they are nice plows.
just my 2cents worth
