I am restoring a 39 B (first year styled) and the hood wont fit. The distance between the Radiator cap hole and the air stack hole are fine, but the muffler, which is in between, is a good 1/2" or more too far back and you cannot change it because it and the air stack bolt directly to the radiator top tank. It has the old 3 bolt muffler flange. Any suggestions????

The correct muffler from JD "AB1541R" corrected the problem. This other muffler has a B17R number on it and will bolt up but is about a half inch farther away from the mount causing a collision with the hood. Man am I glad that is over. Thanks to all who helped me solve the mystery !!

Well it appears that my hood must be correct, as others have measured theirs for me. I have a new muffler ordered at JD today so I am going to see if my muffler is any different from that one. If not, I'm gonna have to modify the flange on mine to make it work. Thannks to all who have helped so far. I'll post the results of todays findings.

The hood on my 39B ser #71828 measures 7" center to center, radiator to muffler.

So does mine but when I bolt the muffler to the radiator tank, they are 7 1/2 inches apart. Shimming would make it worse so its a tough situation. I'mm looking at a new JD muffler today to see if any different. Thank you for measuring.

I remember the gas tank hole spacings being different on those early styled B's ,but not the radiator hole ? Maybe no one got that far once they found out the gas and fuel tanks wouldn't fit ?

Jim, I measured my 40 B. 7 inches center of radiator cap to center of muffler hole. Hood has never been cut. Hope this helps. Ron Mn.

I got the tractor in a basket. I thought this hood was on it, but the owner keeps referring to having to have someone patch the hood at the muffler and this hood is untouched. (no Patch) The hood I have appears to be about 7 inches center to center on the Radiator to muffler hole and it needs to be about 6 1/2. If anyone has B ser# 60,000 to 95,999 that could measure theirs for me that might help.

That would make it worse since it bolts on toward the front. I am wondering if I have the right hood with this tractor. It calls for an AB1541R, but at serial 95999 and at 210000 the part number changed again. Wish I could find someone with an early styled ser 60,000 to 95,999 to measure the center to center for me. This one measures that same as my later ser 236,XXX.

jim maybe this will help. loosen the three bolts that hold the muffler to the radiator about half way out that should pull the muffler away enough to slid the hood on. the bolts will be fun to tighten back up but you will get them. just take your time.
