I recently purchased a 1956 John Deere model 50 tractor that has a fuel sediment bulb with the automatic shutoff valve in it. The valve does not shut off and fuel is leaking by the carb. also and into the crankcase of the tractor when it sits for any length of time. There is also a square shaped bolt on the top of the sediment bulb that I assumed was the manual shutoff for the gas, but when I turn it in all the way it does not stop the flow of fuel either. Is there an adjustment to the auto shutoff on this sediment bulb? I see a small screw sticking out of the very top and it has a little round piece screwed to it. What is this for? Can I repair this sediment bulb or should I just replace it? Or would you suggest putting some kind of a ball valve or something in the line somewhere to manually shut off the fuel? All you old time John Deere guys, I need some of your wisdom here!!! Thanks for any reply!

In addition to what John T told you, there is a little metal slug in the middle and when you take it apart,if you don't look for it it has a way of getting away from you.

Good tip PLUS I once knew this "Dude" (not saying who lol) who got the metal pancakes mixed up and put back together sort of upside down and although it fit n all went back together fine, THE SHUTOFF PLUNGER FAILED TO OPERATE THAT WAY Hmmmmm mmm.

You can stop the gas, i had the same thing on a 530. The diaphrams in the sediment bowl are likely the problem. Deere still carries these and all together it cost less that $10

Jim, on the very top center of the assembly is a lil screw thread rising up that usually has a knurled nut which may have been replaced with something different over the years. It serves as a manual override to let gas flow. What happens is you loosen n raise the nut and that allows you to manually depress the screw/plunger to allow gas to flow to the carb even when shes not running and theres no oil pressure to push the diaphram down. They are often kept screwed down to not allow dust or moisture to enter and unscrewed up when you want to be able to depress the screw to manualy override the shut off when shes not running. When you raise the nut and push the screw/plunger down it causes the same thing to happen that does when oil pressure pushes the rubber diaphram down so you can let gas flow to the carb when shes not running. CLEAR AS MUD???

The only practical repair is to go to Mother Deere and buy a rebuild kit with the two new rubber diaphrams and I also replace the lil rubber o ring/washer on the vertical plunger that does the actual gas shut off when its in the raised position and clean n smooth the other sealing surfaces.

Often our buddy Frank posts a picture breakdown of the assembly that helps show n explain what I just posted.
