Can someone please explain the significance of the Barber-Greene wheels and weights that you sometimes see on John Derre Tractors? I know that Barber Greene makes paving equipment but why the stuff for farm tractors? Thanks for your help Jerry

Jerry,

John Deere built (for Barber-Greene) a custom Model 50 tractor that was fitted by Barber-Greene with a elevator/loader for conveying a windrow of snow, dirt, gravel, etc. into a truck. Deere built about 200 of these custom tractors with 12x28 rear tires mounted on custom 8x28 rims and cast centers. The tractor also had a custom short-yoke 9:00x10 single front wheel assembly. In addition, the tractor sported a larger steering wheel to help turn this unit with no power steering, turned up headlight brackets, no PTO shaft, and a few other minor alterations to the regular John Deere Model 50 tractor.

Jerry,

You can view a restored Barber-Greene Model 50 by visiting the "Tractor Photos" page in the YT "Galleries" in the left-hand margin of this page. Search for "John Deere Barber-Greene Model 50". This unit has been painted "John Deere" green with decals. The actual Barber-Greene unit would have been painted "Barber-
Greene" green and would have had no decals other than the service decal on the air cleaner housing.
