Help!!! JD 2440 with front loader lost all hydraulics....three point hitch, power steering, front loader controls. Fluid levels are right on the money. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem or is this a common malady for this model JD? Have no manual for this tractor. Thanks in advance for any help.
Jerry

Check out the coupler between the front crankshaft pulley and the main hyd. pump. Those couplers will fail once in a while. You'll probably need to remove the coupler to do a good inspection of the splines that spline onto the pump shaft. Not hard to do, and you can replace your fan belt while it's off.

Just in case that isn't the problem, where would I look next? The sheared spline sounds about as logical as it goes, but you know old tractors. They have a way of being obstinate. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be elbow deep in green and yellow tomorrow. Thanks again!

Has the filter been changed recently? I'm a little unfamiliar with Deere's utility tractors like the 2440. If it was a Waterloo-built tractor (4020, 4430, ect.), the next places I'd look would be the suction screen, transmission pump, and the transmission pump driveshaft on the newer tractors. I'm pretty sure the utility tractors have some sort of suction screen, and they must have a transmission pump to supply the main pump, as the piston-type main pump cannot draw oil. Failing that, I'd suspect the main pump's stroke control valve, or a major internal leak.

I really appreciate the feedback. When you refer to a transmission pump, can I assume that one has to service this pump thru an access plate or is complete removal of the transmission necessary. Sorry for asking all of these questions, but I'm just trying to minimize the job and avoid a complete teardown, if possible. Thanks again for all of your assistance. I'll let you know how I make out.

You will cost yourself extra time and money flying blind without some info. Mother Deere has a parts lookup section on her web site. 1-800-522-7448 for the service manual or wish you had.

You'll have to split the tractor between the clutch housing and transmission to do the transmission pump. About 7 steel hyd lines with O-rings on each end too.Been there, done that. Better get a service manual if you go there.

I really appreciate all of your responses and all of the suggestions. I'll get the manual. Let's hope that its the connector between the main pump and the crank pulley. If not, I suppose I'll get a lesson in green and yellow innards. Thanks again!
