Buying used 5400 - Anyone have suggestions

I'm considering buying a used 1995 John Deere 5400. It is 60hp, MFWD, 7050 engine hours, power reverser transmission, industrial tires; 16.9-30 rear and 11.2-24 front, dual mid mount hydraulics for the loader control (540 loader), both draft links on the 3 pt hitch are telescoping and it has a coolant heater. Does anyone have any experience with this tractor to point out issues I need to beware of? Are there questions I need to make sure to ask the dealer? Being a first time tractor buyer, I know I'm ignorant about a lot of tractor issues, but I'm trying to learn before I leap. Thanks to anyone with suggestions.

THANKS to all you tractor guys and gals out there participating on this discussion site - you don't know how impressed I am with the generosity of all of you. Taking the time to help each other out – what an awesome concept! Thank you again – very very much.

I agree. That's quite a few hours, and the 5000s did have their fair share of problems, although we have a few around here that get used much harder than they probably should, and they hold up reasonably well considering how they're used. Those just aren't tractors meant to run 10,000 hours getting the heck worked out of them.

I do some work at a winery , repairing equipment. They have a 5400N-narrow for going between rows of grapes..It's been Ok..Some electrical issues [ dash gauges , warning lights]I think if I were you , I would look for a tractor with a little less hours..Someone got their useable hours out of it, without dumping a lot of money back into it....

5000 and first half of 5000 Ten production were just awful. Transmission, hydraulics, clutch, you name it. Have a look at the new JD M4WD 5105 instead.

I agree tooooo o many hours, Industrial tires give impression that it has been used in a rough job. maybe highway work, STAY AWAY FROM IT...I have several 5400s and they are good, not that good.
