B Questions - Just Brought it Home

I just brought home the first JD in my tractor collection, a B. I don't have the information on it yet, so I was wondering:

1. What is the year? The serial number is B118779.
2. What are the correct spark plugs and gap? It came with Champion D21.
3. The only way I can get it to start with my battery is with the petcocks open; otherwise it turns over only once or twice. Is this how it goes? The battery was newly charged.

Thank you.

Don't know the exact differences between a '42 and a '50 "B" start system but can't think they are much different accept starter location. My personal '50 "B",still 6 volt, with higher compression than yours, will crank over forever if needed. It starts on the 3rd cycle every time.If all is up to snuff yours should too, without the releases open.Oh,,,I forgot to mention,I live in the central part of MI.,and it starts the same in the winter (with plenty of choke)! Resist the temptation to go to 12 volt, you DON"T need it.

My battery is 6 volts, negative ground. I haven't looked for a "negative ground" stamp on the starter motor yet. The previous owner, now deceased, put on a 12V negative alternator. It ran this way for several years; I will probably mess around with it next summer. I haven't retried starting w/the petcocks closed since it was adjusted; maybe tomorrow. The starter may be going, because I used a new 6 volt yesterday (and it could be that it's a positive ground starter).

To all,
I read all of your comments and took your advice - thank you. I came in about an hour ago, and am pleased to announce it works great and is fully functional. We had tornado-like winds a couple of days ago (rare for here, but it happens once or twice a decade), and I used the B to move some fallen down pines; I made sure they would move easily before I chained up.
New oil, new plugs, new plug wires, and it starts easily by hand. A big thank you to my friend, Hugh who came over and tweaked it.

For the Ann Arbor guy: I'm in Traverse City. I'll have it at the Buckley Old Engine Show (my local steam/tractor show). I'll be mostly at the Rider-Ericsson hot air engine; when not there, on the B riding around the grounds.

Again, thank you to all.

Jeff

first, welcome in! get your feet wet amd be ready to stay. you've got the green bug now. (just wait until you start bleeding green). i had my local auto parts place (a country type) make up a battery cable for me and the guy used welding cable and put to ends on it with a hammer driven crimper. its been there for 6 or 7 years now and hasn't coroded up once.

open the petcocks that's what theyre there for. if it's too much work you're not going to get far with a 2cyl jd. much easier on starter, battery & you'll find it starts alot better too most of the time. original manuals can be found on ebay if you're willing to pay up. it's been well worth it in my experience. d21's should work great & are avail. @ napa. good luck & hope you don't take offense as i'm only trying to help & save you $ & grief in the long run.

Just for your info, my dad purchased a new "B" in October of '41 - It's in the 125000 serial# range, & is considered a '42, but we always called it a '41.

Use a heavy gauge cables for 6 volt systems. That tractor should be 6 volt + ground is that what your running ? Make sure your starter is in good order pay close attention to the bushings and brushes. Have that battery load tested. 6 volt batteries have a real short life compared to 12 volt ones.

Jeff -- You asked several questions -- I will pick off a couple easy ones and perhaps someone else will come in with some more -- get this started so to speak.

B118721 through B136314 were of the 1942 production year output, so yours is a '42 tractor; early in the production year! If I were to guess, I would say your tractor shipped well ahead of Pearl Harbor!

Your tractor would use the same plugs as the model H John Deere of the same period. Champion D21 is probably one of the most common plugs -- and I believe it should be gapped at 0.030 inch. For more on sparkplugs, go to the JD-H Restoration Site -- and when you get there, one-click on Elect Systems. Toward the end of that piece you will find a host of differrent plugs that should work. Be careful. If that tractor has magneto ignition, DO NOT use resistor plugs or resistance wires -- too hard on the magneto coil!

I will leave the electric starting question to another.

Be sure to purchase the manuals for your tractor if they didn't come with it. You can buy the ORM 2005 Operator's Manual and PC330 Parts Catalog from Deere Pubs (800)522-7448. When you call, tell them your tractor's serial number so that can verify these are the right books for you. Deere publications can be purchased hard copy or on CD -- think on the choice before you order.

For a service manual, you will need to go to a consolidated book by Primedia called the I&T (JD-4) Shop Service Manual. Deere Pubs may have it, your local Deere dealer may have it too! It runs in the neighborhood of $25 to $30. The other two are usually in the $35 range. Welcome aboard. (PatB)

Pat, What about John Deere's official B service manual SM-2004? It covers B96000 and up and is worth the bundle of money it is selling for now. I got mine when it was $23 and would not be without it. Bob

Bob -- I am very much aware of SM2004, but using the Deere Pubs Catalog, I wasn't able to be sure when it came in. I do not get into the B's that much. The Deere Pubs Catalog shows SM2004 applicable to B-201000 & up, and also shows SM2000 for all other B tractors. So there isn't much help there!

Yes indeed, if one can find the $100 Deere is getting for the book these days, I understand it is the one to have. Not being sure -- I was hesitant to identify the SM2004 to a new JD fellow!

While I mention SM2000 -- let me state once again, SM2000 is not a service manual for ANY tractor, but rather -- a specialty service manual dealing with selected subjects -- not the entire tractor! Good point made, Bob, on the SM2004. It would be perfect for this owner. (PatB)

Pat, At least some of the JDPublications catalogs do list the SM2004 as for B 201,000 up even though it does indeed cover the earlier Bs from 96000. It must have cost them a sale or two over the years. BTW, I am impressed with your H restoration web site. Bob

Either a bad battery or a bad starter, good all around and you do NOT need to open petcocks and yep use a plug with the heat range of that D21 but an Autolight is better

We have one in the family that is within 1000 of that serial number and it is a spring of 1941 tractor. For the starting part, do you have a voltmeter to check all your connections. We have also used d-21 plugs but have not used it for about 5 years. J.
