JD 55 Combine steering problem?

I tried to pick up my 'new' combine and the steering cable came unravelled. The adjustment pulleys are extended all the way and the cables are simply a little too long. I am guessing that these cables stretch over time? How can I go about shortening these cables? Do I need new ones altogether? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

What year would it be to have cable steering? all I ever seen was bars conectod or hydrolic. I would think it bust be a very early model.

Get some aircraft cable and some cable clamps and make some new one.You can use cable ( u bolt)clamps or high tensil fence sleeves if you have a fencing sleeve crimper.

Not sure of the year, but it is a square back 55...I don't think that it is tremendously old. To further complicate things, I went to the JD dealer yesterday and found out the the cables are exactly the same length that they are supposed to be. I have been installing them wrong somehow...it isn't rocket science, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out. Try try again I suppose.

If it is a square back then it is between a 1964 and a 1969. Supprised that would have cables as the 45's of that time had complete hydrostatic steering with just hydrolic lines from steering wheel to rear axle. The only self propelled combine that I ever have seen with cable steering was our old Massey Harris Clipper 7' self propelled dating from the 40's or early 50's
