I have a chance to purchase a supposedly 1957 John Deere model 420 tractor. The serial no. tag is missing. I am not sure which model 420 it is as I have never seen one like it, and am also not real familiar with the 420's. This tractor has no PTO shaft in the rear and the rear axles don't come straight out of the rear end but instead they are short and come out of a gearbox behind where the normal axle would come out, like the axle is driven by a gear. The tractor has a wide front and what appears to be a very good constructed after market 3 point hitch on the rear. There is also another lever on the side of the transmission that sticks up right next to the brake pedals and it feels like another shift lever, What is this lever for? I was unable to drive the tractor as yet so I'm not sure about that lever. The tractor has a 5 speed trans. I would like to know if someone can tell me what model 420 this may be and whatever else you can tell me about the tractor. As far as the shape of the tractor, it's a real project tractor and needs a lot of help!! What would it be worth? Thanks for any reply!!

Jim,
It"s hard to say what model it is you have. The way you describe the rear axles being short it"s a possibility it"s a utility or highcrop. A picture would help ID this thing. Does it look like one of these?

Just a bunch of questions? Wide or narrow front end? Front end adjustable for width? Vertical steering wheel like an A or B or a slant steering wheel more like a car? Front tire size? Rear tire size? Rear wheels are they a bolt on in different position to change wheel tread or power adjusted? Rear wheels 24", 28" or 34"? How many lift arms on the rockshaft,2 or 3? Vertical or horisantal muffler? And they only came with a 3 point hitch, not avaible without for it to be an aftermarket hitch. Sounds like it could be a 420U Utility, or 420S Standard but could be a 420W Row Crop Utility or a 420V Vegetable between a 420W in height and a 420T Tricacle, avaible in dual front, single front wheels or whide front axle, or a 420H High crop. Could have a direction reverser for loader use, Live or standard PTO, single or dual rockshaft, manual adjusted wheel tread adjustment, power shift wheels, or on the 34" the worm gear adjustment on rear wheels and plate should be on side of engine, left I think

The tractor has an adjustable wide front end, the steering is straight, like the older tractors, it is not slant steer, the rear wheels are not spin outs, and the rear tire size is 14.9x ....24, I think. It has a vertical muffler. The hood has been cut and torn back by the muffler, I don't know why though. As I mentioned earlier, there is no PTO shaft. The tractor would need a complete new electrical system and new carb as someone has put a Zenith "will fit" carb on it. Tha tractor needs a lot of help. I really think I will pass on buying it as It would be too expensive to restore but I would still like to figure out what kind of 420 it is. Thanks for your help, Jim

The lever you are talking about coming out of the transmission is probably a reverser. Sounds like you are looking at some type of 420I. Industrial tractor or a special utility. Project tractors require a lot of money to restore.
