Hi guys (Glen in TX), My shift pin springs (looks like there are 2 on the drawing)which move the PTO shift pin back and forth from the 540rpm drive gear to the 1000rpm drive gear, don"t seem to have much "spring" action in them. I see that there is a screw on the "front" PTO which is directly in the center of the PTO shaft itself. Can I access and change these two shift pin springs by removing this screw? Or, how do I go about replacing these springs. I have the fluid drained for other reasons, so now is the best time. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm not Glen but my guess is the small shift pin is bent or broken. You can't change both springs without splitting between clutch housing and tranns. housing. To use 540 rpm's you can try putting a penny for shim between stub shaft. Tx Jim

Thanks Jim! I"m not sure if the pin is bent, It looks dead center as it should be when I look at it straight on. I can pull it really easily out and push it back in easily aswell. It pulls out easier than it pushes back in. If I pull it out manually, then bolt on the 1000rmp pto adapter, will this be enought to hold it engaged into the 1000 rpm and not slip back in toward 540rpm while it is running? Don"t want to damage anything. I don"t think the pin is bent at all, but let me know what you think about this. Thanks a million! PS. John Deere dealership says 13 gal. of hydraulic fluid and my IT manual says the capacity is 11 gallons for a 4010. Which is correct?

What pin are you refering to when you say your looking at it? The shift pins I'm refering to are about the size of a 16 penny nail. The tractor hyd. capacity will be less than when built because of oil trapped in several places suchas hyd.pump, steering valve, rockshaft, etc.

Hey Jim, thanks again for your response. The pin I am talking about that I can visually see is the actual shift pin which is visible as soon as you remove the 540rpm or 1000rpm adapter. This pin shifts the the drive gears (inside transmission) back and forth to whichever is desired, 540 or 1000. In the manual it says that it should spring out on its own when you pull the 540 adapter off which will automatically shift the drive gear to the 1000rpm gear. The back of the 1000rpm pto adapter has an indentation in it to allow the shift pin to pertrude into the back of the adapter by about an inch or so keeping the 1000 rpm drive gear (in transmission case) engaged. The tiny springs (in the core center of main pto drive shaft)in back of the shift pin keep constant pressure so the pin doesn"t push in, engaging the 540 drive gear while the pto is running. The 540rpm pto adapter does not have the indentation on the back. It is exactly flat on the back, which keeps the shift pin "pushed in" to keep the 540 rpm drive gear engaged. My whole point is that the springs that are supposed to be pushing the shift pin into the back of the 1000 adapter when you want to change from 540, do not have much "spring" left in them. I have to pull it out gently with pliers. But my question is that, even if there isn"t much "spring" left, will it be enough to keep the shift pin into the back of the 1000rpm pto adapter. If the spring doesn"t hold it in enough, I am afraid it will drift back into 540 mode while the tractor is running and clash some gears. What do you think?
