A slot in the gear shift ? The tower has extra slots in the side for a spring to hold it in neutral ? Maybe this is what you ask ?

The lever up above the clutch could be an optional directional reverser. You push the clutch in then pull the lever back and let the clutch out and you are going backwards at the same speed as whatever forward gear you were in. It may also be a good idea to not use this too much as not to tear it up as it is pretty old and just shift into reverse gear.

Being 12V who knows how the electrical system may have been cobbeled up. They were 6V positive ground with a generator from the factory. There maybe a 1/2 burned out 6V coil in there without a ballast resisitor. Backwards coil polarity is a very common find. If there is dirt, gum, goo or rust anywhere in the fuel system. She will never run decent. Many times the tinkerer working without a manual. They adjust the carb and crank the mixture full rich when tring to lean the mixture. If equiped with resitor core wires it will never run right.

Gas, diesel, wheels, crawler? If returned to factory specs, a 440 will eat a Ford 8N alive. As previously stated the Deere's backhoe will snap the Ford's main castings. Have you received any service manuals with it or have you ordered them yet? 1-800-522-7448 cheap from Deere. All some 2-53 Detroits need is a fresh set of N35 injectors. The gassers usually need solid core plug wires, the coil polarity corrected, Auto lite 216 plugs and a new distributer bushing. Either will require adjusting the valves/valves + injectors, clean fuel and a clean airfilter.

My friend is looking at a gas 440 crawler with a 6 way blade. the owner is asking 6500 dollars. the tractor seems straight and the under carraige is good. is this a decent price? is the two cly. motor underpowered? Thanks Big City

First, this is a lot more tractor than an 8N ford. It may need some minor work like a tune up and adjust the valves, but don't write it off yet. I doubt your 8N Ford could handle the backhoe weight. If you decide to sell, where are you located? a lot of people would be interested.
