John Deere 1120?

I spend most of my time on the Massey or the 8N board but today I had a friend ask me to post a message for him.

He said he had an 1120. Now when I look in my tractor specs site, I can't find an 1120.

But, he says this is a 79 year tractor that started having a problem. The PTO shaft turns slowly when engaged and if he puts on a work glove, he can actually stop and hold the shaft.

Now, I know zilch about a JD although currently thinking about upsizing to a 90 HP range JD. Can any of you offer any suggestions as to what his problem might be and can a relatively competent individual with a manual in hand address it adequately?

Thanks in advance.

For God's sakes, tell him to keep his hand off of the PTO shaft!

One of these times, the shaft won't stop, and neither will his hand. That has GOT to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of someone trying!

The 1120 is Mannheim-built, if in the US, may be a "gray market" tractor out of Canda???

The problem could be as simple as a bad or mis-adjusted PTO brake, or warped clutch plates or hydraulic problems in the hydraulically-operated PTO clutch system.

Your friend can look at parts breakdowns at:

Or, he can get the factory parts and service manuals by phoning Deere Techpubs @ 1-800-522-7448.

Yea, I thought that was a dumb move and told him so. Man, I have heard too many horror stories about people getting tangled up in PTO shafts.

Thanks for the information.

we have a 1120 and they are quite popular

i think they are equivalent to a 1020 us model

3 cyl engine 45hp there are two positions for the pto lever unlike some tractors the lever should be all the way back for enganged pto and in the middle for idle

i think if you pull it forward it turns on the momentum of the clutch but don't quote me on that
