1951 B Shifter

The shifter on my 1951 B will lift completely out of the socket. By being very gentle, I can press down on it and get it into all the gears. Is this hard to fix?

Thanks!

I have repaired many of these by drilling a hole in the shaft and inserting a roll pin or small bolt, it is an easy repair and none have come loose.

Probably not too hard to fix, you'll need to have a parts diagram (page66 of PC-330). Take off the shift quadrant, likely the snap ring has come off due to wear or it just broke, look to see what is missing (down inside the trans) and replace/repair all the pieces that allow the shifter to pivot and stay in place. Good luck.

A real problem with those gear shifter handles is that the snap ring grooves rust and deteriorate until the shoulder rounds and lets the snap ring ride up and out. They are none too deep with nice sharp edges to begin with. The last one I did I welded the groove and recut it after grinding the shaft back to size. You can also use an e-clip or drill it through for a roll pin to hold the washer, or you can even spot weld a washer in place to end load the spring, though you will have to cut this weld if you ever wish to disassemble it.

Many ways to skin that cat.
