I was told today that a Model A core is going from $150 to $350 and there is no stock on them.

I purchased an A&I core for a late A. It was made in Irland. Was a 4 row with smaller tubes than the original 3 row. I am sure it flows as much. It had one corner bumped in shipping or handling somewhere along the way and didn't notice the tube in the corner was cracked. At least not till water went in. Opted to solder the tube verses the trouble of swapping it out. I ordered the core in July. No shortage of them then.

That reminds me. All the corners on mine were bent too. It looked like they barrel rolled this thing on the boxing counter. Three 11oz. bottles of Bars Leak (Heavy Duty)fixed it. A&I will get the bill.

Which model A ? There are 4 different aftermarket cores available out there and more sources also. Like Earl said check the row of tubes in your old core and get what you want because there are cheaper ones made too with less tubes. Even the late styled core should be no more than $260 list price. Have you tried getting a quote for a recore or repair from a local radiator shop.

The one I took out had 3 rows, I'm not saying that core was the original one, because I don't know if Grandpa had ever changed it out. The one I got from A&I has four rows, it looks like it will pass just as much water if not more then the three row, correct if I am wrong on that. A tech at A&I said I could try Bars Leaks and they would pay for the bill. I hate the thought of tearing this thing down again for the third time after I have painted it. What a pain in the butt. As for the gasket not fitting he said he has seen that happenif the gaskets have been on the shelf a long time. I guess we will see what happens with the Bars Leaks.

Am I understanding you bought a new one and they said to use bars leak on it? I would return it and they should let you no questions asked. If you put bars leak in it and then it still leaks and try to return it they aren't going to take it back. Most all the suppliers get the cores from A&I or Rileys. I'd return it and call another dealer near you and bet someone has a new in stock that doesn't leak. I've never had problems with the gaskets for radiators from JD but I know others have and it was probably due to the age of the gaskets. Like others said you can buy a fresh roll of sheet material and make some.

They said they would take it back but then they wanted me to pay shipping back to them and they would pay me back for that. BUT then they Wanted another $150 on top of the $146 I already gave them for an new core. Then they did not even know when it would this new core would be shipped to me. Who is Rileys?

Jim, Aftermarket cores are available. Just make sure of the tube size and the correct number of tube rows, if you are going to pull or work your tractor. Earl In Illinois

I checked with a local radiator shop Friday. He is an A&I distributor. He told me 173.00 plus freight for a core for 488,000 and later A's. When I said I wanted to order one, he called A&I. They said that had a machine down that is used in making these particular cores and it had been down for 4 months!?!?! They did not know when it would be repaired and could not give a delivery time...none in stock. Seems sorta crazy to me!

A&I told me today that the website so show the change in prices and that they are going to new vendor and that vendor has them on back order. Doesn't sound like a good vendor to go through to me. My core which was the last one they had in stock was made in Ireland. I suppose the new vendor is out of China. What isn't right?

I just got a new core for my 70 from A&I it was $135 and shipped free because my vendor ordered more then $500 worth of goods. This one is a "Irish" core. The core I stuck in my 51' "A" about 6 years ago was also a A&I and its doing just fine. On the "A" I used the cork gasket that comes on a roll about 2" wide (maybe less) and is sticky on one side and thats holding fine-the 70 got deere gaskets and its holding fine as well. I do remember having a little trouble with the core on the "A" as 2 or 4 of the bolt holes were not right on.
