Hey guys, I am pretty sure I have seen this done before but is it possible to run the oil return from the turbocharger into the top of the ventilator pump if I disable the small ventilator pump line from the intake upon installing a turbo?? From what I am hearing, the ventilator pump is a part that is not needed and could even be blocked off. Thanks for the info.

The very early M&W turbos did return the oil to the rocker arm cover, but it was very unsatisfactory and was quickly changes to a drain put in the face of the ventilator pump.Too much oil returning and the oil soon leaked under the cover gasket and everywhere else
.A hole was drilled in the face of the pump cover and a 1/2" pipe nipple was brazed into the hole. An elbow was screwed on to the nipple and a short piece of pipe screwed into the elbow. Then a hose was clamped over the pipe and run up to the drain on the turbo. You also must cap off the line going from the vent pump to the intake manifold. The later M&W turbos had a 3/4" steel line that ran down under the engine and oil returned through a plug in the front of the oil pan.
The hole in the top of the vent pump is not large enough to gravity flow all the returning oil from the turbo. To do this could possibly cause premature failure of the turbo seals.

MSB, now thaaaaatts what I was talking about! I knew I had seen it before, but didn"t know that there was a nipple drilled into the face of the ventilator pump. Thought it was the top, existing hole. Thanks for shedding some light on the issue. I just bought my return line, flange, 1/2"male to 1/2" barbed, push on fitting, and a 1/2" male to female elbow. this will work perfectly, just need to braze a nipple on the face plate. So, if it is done this way, it is sure to handle the turbo oil drain volume? Thanks for the great info!

The second version of the 4020 (side console beginning in 1969) has no ventilator pump. As far as I know, no JD engine after has had a ventilator pump. So it may not be necessary to repair it or even to use it in earlier engines. I've not seen ventilator pumps on any other makes of engines.

I'd think about poking a hole in the rocker cover and screwing in a fitting (perhaps with gaskets and a pipe nut on the inside) for the turbo oil return. The line would be shorter than going down and around the other side to the ventilator pump.
