I can start it and it will run for alittle while then dies, start it right back up and the same thing. So here is my question.Do the settlement bowls where they screw into the tank have a nipple that sticks up into the tank about 2" or so like most IHs?I haven't started to restore it yet,but I am after next weekend and that will be one of the first things I look at.Any thoughts

Often times turning the fuel selector valve will make a difference. Wear in the fuel valve will reduce the size of the opening between the rotating part of the valve and its body. Add to that any wear in the stop and it can allow the valve to go just a bit too far past the port in the body and turn the fuel back off or very nearly off & they'll run out of gas.

Might pay to open the fuel bowl drain & empty the carb. Then open the main fuel valve all the way & note the flow rate. Turn the main valve back and forth a bit & you MAY notice a point where there is a fully sufficient flow. Sometimes if the light is right & you look real close at the sediment bowl you may be able to see this taking place by the amount of turbulence. I know my 44 is real picky about this.

Jim,
I would add to John T's fuel flow comment - make sure you have a steady stream flowing for a full 30 sec. Catch the flow in a clean can or glass container and check for water.

Jim, Ive seen different types of bowl assemblies used, some have the lil pipe with a mesh screen that goes up into the tank and other dont or they have rusted off. Heres how I check gas flow:

Open the carb bowls lower drain cock plug and with the gas on a steady stream 1/16 inch or a lil larger MUST drain steady out the bottom. If not, the problem may be the needle valve n seat or the carbs side inlet strainer or upstream in the sediment bowl or tank outlet.

To check that, remove the fuel inlet line to the carb and insure a strong steady stream the size of the lines ID flows, if so but NOT out the bottom bowl drain as noted above, the problems in the needle n seat or the carbs side inlet strainer. BUTTTTT if the flows weak getting to the carb, then I suspect the sediment bowl or the tank outlet.

To check flow out of the tank and into the bowl, remove the sediment bowls glass bowl and turn the gas on n see if a good stream runs out to enter n fill the glass bowl, if not, then I suspect the lil tube that runs up into the tank or its mesh screen is clogged and often the lil tube n side holes out of the assembly where it turns n goes up vertically into the tank is full of gunk or rust.

If flow tooooo the carb (sediment bowl n tank outlet pipe etc) is good but it fails the carb bowls bottom drain cock plug flow rest per above, the problems the needle n seat or the side inlet strainer. I suggest you remove the side inlet strainers top nut n cap (may need new gasket) and use gumout ect to clean out the side inlet strainer and its top screen and the neelde n seat is avaialble for gumout clean out in the ceter of that middle threaded tube (where top nut screws in)

Nowwwww www if she passes all the flow tests above n the needle n seat is clean n not the problem, have you tried adjusting the carbs top load n idle needles and what affect do they have??? Other problem may be the carbs float level is way too low?????

Does she seem to be running out of gas (flow problem or float problem see above) or is she flooding out with black smoke out the stack???

You FIRST gotta get her to pass the carb bowl bottom drain cock plug test (means tank outlet n sediment bowl n needle n seat n side strainer okay) and then look into float level problems or needle adjustemts. Theres more carb troubleshooting we could get into, but no need to do that until you first insure good gas flow to the carb (tank outlet n sediment bowl okay) and then good flow through the side inlet strainer n needle n seat so she passes the bottom drain plug cock test.

MAKE SURE THE AIR CLEANER BOWL IS CLEAN AND NOT FULL OF WATER and you have fresh clean water free gas !!!!! !!!!!
