Hi all,
What is the difference between a K321AS and a K321s?

Any help is appreciated.

Joel

The guys over at "Weekend Freedom Machines" will be able to help you with all your questions on the 140. If you are unfamilar with WFM, it is a website for JD lawn mowers with lots of knoledgable people with access ot parts and info on these machines. Good luck with your new project, Jason.

The "A" indicates a special oil pan, short, to fit the Deere application. Along with that, there are several shapes of the bottom of the block where the oil pan bolts.

The base of the 140 engine block has NO "ears" that stick out, and the oil pan mounting bolt holes are drilled and tapped UPWARD into the block.

Another type of block has the ears that stick out, and the "ears" have holes drilled fro the bolts that thread downward into the oil pan.

Then, I believe, there is still ANOTHER block that has BOTH sets of holes, and either pan will work. (Some of the blocks are "relieved" from the edge of the crankcase, towards the "ears", so there's no mating surface availabe for the gasket to seal to, if you tried to use the small, short oil pan you require.)

So, that's the area to look at... if it has the correct, short pan, or it is possible to swap the correct pan over to it. Also, (I believe), on the blocks with ears, the ears are may be too wide to fit between the frame rails, but can be sawed off.

Also, dipsticks and the length of the "dipper" on the connecting rod MAY vary between the varies engines.

Kohler A? Double check- 'A' code indicates flat oil pan on Cub Cadet. Plain 'S' means starter, possible JD 140 different pan, Cub Cadet forum indicates JD engine can be made to fit with oil pan change and bit of jiggling?

Original motor in JD 140 is a Kohler K321AS.

I'm wondering if a K321S will fit, maybe I don't have the whole number correct, I'll double check on the K321S.

I know the K321AS is correct as it's the original motor in the machine.

Thanks again for the response.
Joel

The 140 uses the K321AS. You can make the K321S block work but the reliefs in the wings of the block have to be welded full and ground flat. The bottom of the block must also be drilled and tapped to accept the short pan for Deere applications. You must use the Deere pan to maintain proper driveline alignment. If this is an H3 tractor and the remotes are on the front, the 4 hydro lines must be positioned on top of each other on both sides for clearance past the wings on the block. Been there, done that.

This is an H1. I never thought fixing a motor would be so much work. This is the first of these tractors I've had. The motor let go and blew a hole in the block. Have not broken down yet so no exactly sure what let go. Other than that, it's a beautiful tractor, have deck and snow blower. I've been reading on the motor swaps, that doesn't look like a picnic either. Seems as though really need to hold out for a K321AS block. I stick weld, I undestand that cast iron and stick welding don't go along too well, too much heat, I think pre-heat would help, but still not ideal. Would prefer to go with modern engine but those swaps don't seem too easy to do. I've been told vanguard (other posts) will work, does anyone know the Vanguard model number needed?
Thanks again,
Joel
