My son is restoring a D for his FFA project. We removed the cylinder block yesterday. It has had water standing in it at some point. In one cylinder there is a pit about 1" by 1.5" several thousands deep. Funds are tight. Would it be possible to just hone good and re-ring. The pit is at the top of the stroke. I'm not so concerned about power as it will just be used in parades and shows. Pistons are original. How much larger can you go with just using oversize rings? Also, if you bore and go with a larger piston, do you need to do both cylinders? I appreciate any advice, recommendations or direction.

I once ran into a similar situation. I did not have pitting, but I had the top two piston ring grooves worn. I called Otto Gas Engine Works and ordered 1/4 inch wide gapless rings for the top two piston grooves. I then had a machine shop cut the top piston ring grooves to accept the over-width rings. The machine shop trued the top side of the groove and cut downward so the ring travel stayed the same. The gapless rings made up for the normal cylinder wear. I didn't have to mess with oversize rings and reboring. The tractor has fantastic compression and runs great. There is no way you can roll the engine over without opening the petcocks. Give Otto a call. He is great to work with. He has a website. I had less than $100.00 in machine shop work and new rings.

If not too much scoring in cylinders or too much wear on pistons a ring job will probably be just fine. Check ring land wear in pistons and you may want to go with some oversize or overwidth rings and a light honing job. Boring it oversize would require .045, .090 or .125 O.S. pistons if you can find them and rings to match and yes you would need to replace both for engine balance.

Also if pistons not worn bad your other option is sleeving the block back to standard with new standard rings on those pistons. Just be sure to find someone that has sleeved D blocks or JD 2 cylinder blocks with success and don't become someone's guinea pig. No the sleeve doesn't have to stick way out back on a D block or be bored out more in compression area either if the sleeve is done correctly.
