Hey guys:

I have a 1959 JD 730 Diesel electric start. How much oil do these beast"s hold? Is 30W or 15W40 suitable for these engines?

Thanks

Prolonged heavy use in warm weather with multi-grade will result in the oil pressure not holding up as well as you might hope.

Since you ask this you must not have a book on it ? And if so make sure you get it all drained out as there are a couple of drain plugs. One in the center and one off to the side under the fylwheel area to drain the timing gear compartment. Either weight would be fine, but if you plan on running it much below 32°F use the 15w-40 as far as capacity I don't have my book handy and it's been awhile but I think ? it is going to use up all of a 12 pk this may include the air cleaner too ? Check it with the dipstick resting on the threads. And make sure you get a NEW rubber packing for the oil filter cover. The old one may be rock hard and have to be picked out with a small sharp tool.
