Saw a similar setup on a square baler the other day near here. Motor cart had only two wheels, but both cart and baler were on steel. Musta been a real project to keep a team of four horses on windrow!

Haven't you beat on the Amish enough ????????????? in reply to El Toro, 10-26-2006 06:06:06
They don't choose to use computers so they can't even tell you to lay off.

No taste at all.

Don't be so sure about that ? I know some have cell phones and they never have a problem using someone elses equipment, phone, electric, car, tractor, etc. I have had some of them do some building work for me and I'm not impressed. I'm not alone in this, those that live right in the heart of Amish country know it's more a myth than legend. They have their good and bad just like every other culture.

Here's a rear view of the baler. Note the bale of hay off to the right. Hal

Hmmmmm , wonder what the loop hole is here that they can use the equipment with no problem, including the motor but no tractor.

I give.

The Amish in my area are pretty ingenious when it comes to "adapting" modern machinery to their uses. But I have one question when it comes to moving the bales: where do they put the top link of the three-point on the horse?...:) Mike

Coulple of thoughts.
Rubber tires on the baler?
How would he back that rig up to unload the finished bale?
And like the ealier post, post a picture of the implement he used to move the bales.

I think that model baler has a ramp on rear that bale rolls down out of tailgates way without the need of backing up. Tx Jim

This was posted on the Implement forum sometime ago and someone posted the device that's used by them using mules. It may be in the archives somewhere.

I was listening to the 10o'clock news last night
from York PA and they announced an Amish farmer was charged with child endangerment in the death
of his 8 year son. The father had put his son
inside some farm equipment and then started the engine. They never said what the equipment was.

In the heart of Amish country here in Ohio there are at least 13 sects of the Amish people. Some are almost "English" as they call everyone who is not Amish and some are very strict. This picture shows a fore cart being pulled by mules so I am presuming that this one of the more liberial groups. Strict Amish will not use the baler and would never use mules to work in the field. After being around Amish folks for a long time I can tell the sect by there dress. Most people would say they all dress alike but they don't.

The only ones they are fooling are themselves.

Reminds me of when I saw them cut hay and haul it in to the barn on a horse draw wagon in a pile then feed it into a baler powered by a tractor. The baler had a kicker and was parked in front of the barn and it would kick the bales up into the mow I guess ?

I can't make out the power unit in the photo. But - the Amish in my area (central NY) use the older 1.6 liter Volkswagen diesels in lot of stuff. Seems to be their favorite power-plant - these are the engines that were used in the old diesel Rabbits, Jettas, etc. (I've got two).

The Amish are quite ingenious when building. They're excellent craftsman with wood and metal.
I saw a crew of them on"This Old House" putting a copper facade on a house and it really looked nice. They were scambling all over the roof.
