We are having a problem with our john deere 544c steering valve. It is pushing oil past the steering shaft seal. Replaced seal and checked tolerences all looks good. Reuilt the steering control cylinder, same thing. Had the control popit valve taken apart and checked they say it is fine also. Any experts out there that have seen this before????

the "C's" have an odd steering system that didnt work out well... basically its a metering pump thats attached to the steering wheel. That in turn operates a spool type valve that operates the steering cylinders. The small cylinder in the articulation joint is a feedback cylinder that "tells" the steering valve where it is in a turn.. There should be another seal down in the steering valve/pump at the base of the column. If you take it apart it resembles a basic gear pump.

You described it perfectly. We did take the stering valve pump apart and replaced the seal and checked for wear or any signs of trouble and all looked good. we have had that thing apart 6 times now. The top seal is an all soft rubber seal with no spring or metal inside, just soft rubber. That we replaced, but are you saying there is another seal besides that one?

AT THE TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN THERE IS A THRUST BEARING(TWO FLAT WASHERS AND A ROLLER BEARING). IF THE BEARING GOES OUT THIS LETS THE SHAFT COME UP OUT OF THE SEAL. I HAVE HAD TO EVEN PUT AN EXTRA WASHER IN IF THE HOUSING HAS WORN TO KEEP THE SHAFT IN PLACE. HOPE THIS HELPS DON

We thought the same thing, we shimmed it until we had no play. I want to say that it is gushing out, not just dribbling or seeping. Its like there is a return line plugged or something, but we blew them all out. We have the local dealer scratching there head also.

I'm not an expert - since the C series came out just when I left Deere. But, the older 544s had the same basic steering valves as uses in 540 skidders, 4020 ag. tractors, etc. I think at some later date - Deere changed over to Char-Lyn style hand pumps - but I don't know when. With the older style steering valves, there's an internal seal besides the one just under the steering wheel.

We have a couple 544 A's also, and that may be true for them but I think the C's are completly different.
