Is it normal for the sliding discs to have circular grooves on one side or is this a wear problem that has occured along the way? Will this affect the performance greatly? The discs I refer to are the metal discs, not the fiber ones.

WTR also has the sliding drive disks for $60.

Sounds like normal wear to me. Most of the 720-730 clutches I've worked on have been in pretty bad shape. There is a complete clutch kit available for your 720 from WTR Parts in Tyndall South Dakota. It sells for $115 and includes all fiber disks including the 2 bonded ones, release springs, spring washers under the adjusting nuts, new adjusting nuts &cotters, and a clamp on pulley brake pad. 605-589-3128. As for the sliding drive disks you are talking about, they are still available from Deere as are all the clutch parts, but are expensive. If these are not excessively worn in the splnes that fit over the teeth on the fixed drive disk, (most are) they can be resurfaced to clean up the grooving. While you're at it, remove the belt pulley, wash it clean in the solvent of your choice, blow dry with compressed air, and check the condition of the idler bearing (roller) inside the pulley. If it's good,(unlikely) repack it with a moly Hi-Temp grease and reinstall the pulley. If it's not, replace it and the outer race as well as the sheet metal retainer. I have seen some of these races burnt blue from heat, these bearings were a somewhat neglected item on these tractors.Repack the ball ends of the 3 release toggles also. Sounds like alot of work and it will cost you several hundred dollars, but you'll have a nice working clutch for a long time.
