I just got a 1949 A John Deere that i got for parts and it had wheel weights on the rear wheels. This is the first time I have ever seen wheel weights on an A. I am wondering if it is very common for the A to have wheel weights. Any input or comments are welcomed. Also, my main A that i am putting the parts on doesnt have a roll-o-matic front end but the parts tractor does and in perfect condition. Would it be wise to put the roll-o-matic on the good tractor or leave it as is?

Weights always common on any tractors doing much heavy tillage here. JD and F&H weights usually are a bit smoother casting and look nicer on a restoration than local made foundry weights that are usually a copy with rougher edges. The rusted one on right is a foundry weight made locally someplace.

I am partial to the roll-o-matic myself. I do believe all the parts will interchange regardless of year. Let me know if you need me to go through a parts book for you. If both are late A's then it will definitely work. The roll-o-matic is basically just a novelty if you don't use it in the fields so its your option.

While not common, I wouldn't call wheel weights rare. I had a 1949 A with them on as well. they're worth around 80 bucks a pair more or less around here.

Chinging out the front end could be very easy or very difficult. Do both the tractors have "split pedistals"? If so, it's just 4 bolts that hold the lower pedistal on the front. They thread up into the steering column If one or both don't have a split pedistal, it will require taking the entire front end off the tractor from the steering box to the wheels.

I assume both tractors are late styled, if your working machine is early styled, I'm not sure wether or not they would even bolt up. Someone else can answer that.

Good luck.
