Guys, what is a safe exhaust temp operating range of a john deere 4010 4020 diesel. Min-max figures. What is considered a "running hot" exhaust temp. After installing a turbo and not changing the fuel delivery,my 4010 held at 875 degrees for about 15 mins wide open bringing it home from the shop. Thanks guys.

875 sounds about right for WOT under little(road travel) load.I used to recommend the guys shift down when the pyro got to 1050º and was still rising.Interestingly enough your set up will run a higher exhaust temperature with the pump set at 4010 specs than it will when the fuel is turned up where it should be with the turbo.It will also run too hot if the pump is turned too high.The air fuel ratio needs to be balanced even in a diesel if its turbocharged or not.

Concerning your problem above:Been a long time , but I think the intake drops almost straight down from that rubber hose on top of the radiator and runs along below the turbo and then is routed back up at the rear of the turbo. You want to keep the pipe routed away fron the turbo to keep the intake air as cool as possible.The air gets hot enough from the compression from the turbo plus the heat it picks up from the turbo itself.You might also want to fashion a heat shield for between the exhaust manifold and plumbing.
Did the hood fit over the turbo when using a 4320 exhaust manifold?
I once had a 4520 experimental engine in my 4020 and that was how I plumbed it.Had to trim some of the hood (underfold?) for the piping to clear and had to cut a hole in the top of the hood for the turbo.150 horespower, it was a fun set up for 2,000.

Recently moved and stiil haven't unpacked my old Deere & M&W manuals.Maybe in a few days if you need something else.

Ok, I just had the injection pump totally rebuilt 100hrs ago. So it is fresh. I am concerned about the ratio of air and fuel though. How do I determine when the ratio is correct? I am a little concerned that it smokes black a touch more now aswell. Runs phenomenal, but a pretty light stream of black smoke. Not at all heavy smoke, but you can see it pretty good against clear sky. The hood cleared the 4320 Setup nicely. It"s just that damn m&w intake pipe that is pushing the side of my hood out a bit. The m&w turbo is smaller in circumferance than the schwitzer 3lm I have on.If i could just stick a cannister performance air filter on it would solve my problem. then I wouldn"t have to go back by the turbo to use the original filtration system. Oh, I did have to remove a bit of the hood a little closer to the radiator for the exhaust outlet. About 1.5 inches or so. Did a very neat job with .035 disc grinder, primed and touch up with paint after. I am VERY impressed with how things went. Thanks again, have a great night!

A diesel runs anywhere from lean to rich depending on the rack's location. All together different than an engine with a throttle blade.
