I had my block rebored for my jd h and they shipped me some aluminum pistons. Has anyone else used these in an H? I had heard this type was bad to smoke after I had already bought it from others. There are 3 grooves near the dome of the piston but there isn't a groove for the scraper ring at the bottom of the piston like the originals had. Just curious if I was going to have problems with these?

1951g, I have aluminum (automotive) pistons in my H, they have three grooves, the top two grooves are for compression rings, and with the bottom groove is ventilated and suited for a modern oil control ring assembly.

The package has worked perfectly for almost seven years.

You won"t have any problems as long as you use the appropriate piston rings suited for your aluminum pistons, and the block is properly bored and honed to facilitate seating of the rings.

In general, I agree with toot, the aluminum pistons are fine and generally cause no problems if the cylinder is properly bored and they are properly installed. I'd be curious to know what brand of pistons you have or who you bought them from because I understand from your post that these pistons have no oilring grooves in which case it will smoke. It's unlikely, but maybe the lower compression ring groove could be an oil ring groove, I know the old TSC powerblock pistons were this way. I definately wouldn't use these if there's no oil rings included.

If that block was bored for cast iron pistons your alum. ones may be too tight as they need more I'd double check that skirt clearance. Hastings web site has some good info on specs.

The imfamous aluminum piston question. They are fine, they are in almost every tractor I own, none smoke, give problems, or ever blew up. I prefer them over the wham wham cast irons. To each his own, but aluminum pistons ARE fine. There are a bunch running out there. Most do usually have the same number of ring grooves though. Should be OK still. Youll get a bunch of overdone scientific theories, but the proof lies in the cylinders of my tractors. They all run fine!

Personally I've never liked the aluminum pistons. I found a lot of them using automotive type oil rings. They are okay if installed properly but you have to be careful on installation. If you have bore properly maybe you could get some cast iron. 45 over size.
