I"ve got a broken rockerarm that results in no compression on cylinder #3. I have the new one to put on, but have never done this. Any secrets? It looks pretty straightforward but you never know. Checking valve clearance afterwards--how do you turn the engine over to TDC? Jack up the rear wheels? Thanks for the info.

Remove the timing cover and using a large screwdriver, pry up from the botton until the TDC mark lines up with the scribe mark on the transmissiom case.If on #1 TDC the front 3 rocker arms should be lose.If not you are on #6 TDC. If you are on on #1 adjust the first 3 rocker arms, skip one adjust the next, skip one, adjust the next, etc stopping at the last three. If on #6TDC start at the rear and adjust the opposite way as stated for #1 TDC.Once you have the fist setting adjusted, turn the flywheel one full turn until TDC lines up once again and then repeat the sequence from the opposite direction.
Adjust both intake and exhaust valves to .018 in. if the engine is a diesel.Adjust gasoline engine valves to .015 in for intake and .028 in.for exhaust. Valve sequence is as follows: Ex-in-in-ex-ex-in-in-ex-ex-in-in-ex. Gasoline clearance would then be .028-.015-.015-.028-.015-.028 in both directions.
ON an older engine I like to set the clearence a bit snug due to wear on the rocker arm where they contact the valve stem

On my early 4020 there is a plate on the flywheel housing on the right side, just back from the distributor location. Under that cover is where you find the TDC marks and the starter gear is exposed so you can turn the crankshaft with a large screwdriver or small pry bar.
