I have a repair manual for my JD 401b industrial tractor. It shows a special tool shaped like a Y for timing the cam, and other gears. It gives a number. Does JD sell special tools? If so is the tool number the same as the part number? Stan

As the other poster stated, it is nothing but a "glorified ruler." I worked in several Deere dealerships, and there were many tools such as this one - i.e. JD254. They hung on the wall and rarely got used. You can easily make one by welding a V to a piece of flatstock.

You really dont need that tool... its a glorified ruler. All timing marks point to the center of the crank with #1 at TDC. That "Y" part of the tool ensures that the straight edge is in the center of the crank... not rocket science-- save the money and use anything straight...

I don't see why they used that tool ? Most everything else has the gears marked. When I tore one down I just made my own marks on the gears BEFORE I tore it apart then just put it all back the same place. Those gears are real hard so you will need a small grinder like a dremal or an engraver.

When I tore it down I did mark the gears. I used a dremal tool, and marked with a white marking pencil. I just thought it would be good to double check. Stan

a double check can't hurt. Maybe your local JD dealer has one you can borrow or make a tracing of it for a pattern ? That's how I got my clutch finger tool and oil seal installer for 4020's
