I have sealed 3 old rusty tractor gas tanks with red-kote It works good . -IF- you follow the directions. I bought a carton of B-B's at wal-mart . shake them around inside & pour them out pour in about 1 pint of MEK. 2 times -depending on the size of tank blow dry - with alot of air . MEK is worse than paint thinner do all cleaning with MEK -OUTSIDE IN FRESH AIR. NOT INSIDE IN A SHOP. & seal with red -kote.

John,
The most import thing is to make sure your tank is clean before you add any coating. I use an auto restoration house in Milwaukee that acid dips the tank for me (cost $60). When I get the tank back, it is cleaned to bare metal inside and out, I then repair any holes with lead solder if necessary, then use a good fuel tank liner, I use “Kreem” advertises in Green Magazine, but other brands will work and then prim and paint the outside before putting the tank back on the tractor.

I will second the good opinion on RED KOTE.
It dries like a rubber liner and fixes rusty tanks.I have had to cote tank twice some times. Clean tank good,"The works" bathroom cleaner works good. Rinse good. patch the holes you can see with solder .
Buy a gallon of MEK to use as the prep.
Pour it in and drain it out. Then add the red kote and roll it around to cote all the surface. Then let it drain out for a couple of hours or a day.
Make sure it dries real good before you fill it with gas.A week or 3 . If you can still smell it it's not dry yet.

Do you think it would be smart to apply Red Kote, even though I don't have a leak? My point is this: if I already have the tank off, why not apply the Red Kote... and feel confident that I won't have problems down the lane.

Yep, I know... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But heck, if the tank is already off... ???

If it wasn't rusty and it didn't leak then I wouldn't bother. If it is rusty on the inside then the red Kote will fuse all of the loose particles and it won't clog up the strainers..Your call.
It will cost you about $35 to cote the tank. If you do cote it then make sure it is good and dry before you fill it with gas. If it is the least bit still tacky when you fill it ,, it will never dry.

I use a product called Red Coat. Local auto parts store has it. 1 quart will cover 3 20 gal. tanks or more. There are several name brands out. If you can't find it in your area I can get the name of a local store that you can contact. I have had good luck with the Red Coat brand.
