Hello all, I was wondering what a JD H is worth. The tractor is in overall good condition, with a decent paint job. New tires all the way around and rims in very good condition. Tractor runs well, shifts well, and steers good. It has been converted to 12v and modern 12v lights. The Serial # is missing. It doesn't have the earlier style front rims. The hydraulic lever assembly has been removed and replaced with a plate, but is included. Gauges work and shutters are there. Thanks for replying and Happy New Year. Oh, this tractor is in Virginia.

Well, folks I went and bought the H. I did get it delivered for $2650. Where I am from, that is a decent price for any old putt-putt that is straight and runs well. He is still checking to see if he might have the serial # in some paperwork that came with the tractor. I do believe whoever went through it knew what they were doing because it sound really quite and is very smooth in all gears at any speed.

Questions.....What lettering should the tractor have if is a late model? It has small lettering on the hood right now, but most I have seen have larger lettering?

Battery box..... Should it have one and if so does it mount in the frame well in front of the engine?

Capacities....What is the engine oil and transmission capacity and what grade do you recommend?

Any other thoughts or suggestions...??? I greatly appreciate your responses and love to talk old tractors and trucks.

My family also has a '37 JD A, '52 JD 60, '56 JD 620, '58 JD 420, '45 Farmall M and a '56 Ford 640...to keep us honest, lol

I am also working on an old '46 Chevrolet 1.5 ton as well.

Thanks..... Jim

Hi Jim,

Just to give you an idea - 2 "H"s sold at a sale in Verona WI for 1900 each this time last year. One was a nice looking original with a half a cultivator and the other was wrinkled, tired, poorly restored with a complete cultivator. Neither ran.

People like 'em cause they're cute little buggers and very easy to haul, I guess.

Jim -- What this tractor is worth to you is in large part what your objective is in buying! Without a tag, you can never take it back to original because you cannot determine what original was. Judging from the fronts (Pressed steel I am assuming), the tractor is apparently a 1945 or later (serial number 47796-up). You could have serial number 61116 (last one) that everyone is looking for! Chances are slim to none, and proving it would be in the middle of hard and impossible.

I have found most of the JD model H tractors quite well worn out. All need bearings throughout and many have been victim to "get-by" maintenance. I have to wonder about removal of the hydraulic unit -- anytime you change a bearing housing in relation to the governor or fan shaft, huge problems loom if the job wasn't done with some skill. Ask about manuals that go with the tractor. No manuals usually means that either the present owner did no maintenance, or that it was done blindly.

Go to the JD-H Restoration Site and read the BUYER'S GUIDE. There may be a few other signs you missed. From what you describe, you have found what I would call a pretty decent tractor. But I also have this penchant for looking at only the good things when buying (dumb I know) but I am afraid we all have done it!

After re-reading your post, I believe you could pay between $1200 and $1500 for this tractor and not be hurt, but then turn around and truly use it for a Parts Tractor. The good points you describe may indeed be the only points of real value the machine has. And believe me, as pointed out in the Buyer's Guide, purchasing small or individual parts here and there can take its toll on your pocket book -- a fact to which that many on this board will attest. With those serial tags being reproduced don't be surprised to see that last one pop up. LOL

Thanks! The present owner has owned it for 7-8 years and only puts around the yard with it. He stated that the previuos owner had completely gone through it and he has pictures with it disassembled. He also said that guy was a good mechanic and had many nice Olivers that he had restored and pulled with. He had it listed on eBay and it brought upto $2800, but his reserve was $3000. He will take $2800 from me. It did feel really tight when I drove it and sounded smooth. You don't see these where I am from and they all seem to go pretty high when you do. I know....I am looking at the up side. Hard not to do when you think you have to have something. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Jim

Jim -- Perhaps the best of all solutions here is to encourage the owner to again list it on eBay with a lower reserve if he thinks the tractor has the value it has. You always have the option of buying it in that arena as well. I think he was quite foolish to have failed in selling it for $2800! (PatB)

With a valid tag his price (3,000 ) is about all I ever could get for one. Without that tag in todays market he will be lucky to get half of that.
