Why do I sometimes see pictures of 4010 diesels without a pre cleaner or pre-cleaner piping above the hood? If there is no precleaner above the hood then what is screening the intake hole to the oil bath under the hood? Thanks men. Jon

Nothing. The intake sticks straight up under the hood.Precleaners were always an option with Deere since they were first used. The radiator screens are all that is really needed.

If You look, you will not see any precleaner bowls on Cat equipment. Cat engineers discovered that precleaners ground up the dirt they caught from the vibration of the tractor engines and it was fine enough to go through a paper air filter, so they did a field conversion on all Cat equipment sometime in the 60s. As a result Deere also did away with their(fruitbowl) precleaners in 1969 as did most other companies.

Howdy. Since the 4010s had oil air filters, I highly suggest using a pre-cleaner. Without the pre-cleaner, the oil bowl gets dirty a whole lot faster. I'd agree with the reply regarding paper filters but with oil bath filters, I suspect they would trap the same sized particles regardless of with or without pre-cleaners.
