O.K. I just unstuck a JD B Engine about 3 weeks ago. I dumped diesel fuel in and let it sit a week or so. Then I made a jig to bolt on the flywheel using a piece of 6"x6"x1/2 flat stock with a hole cut inthe center to fit over the crankshaft.(I removed the retaining nut) I drilled 2 holes to match the threaded holes in the flywheel, and welded a piece of schedule 80 2-1/4 x 4" pipe on it. I bolted it to the flywheel and used a 36" pipe wrench GENTLY! Bounced on it 2 times and the 3rd time it came loose. I then turned it by hand incase anything else(push rods, valves) were stuck I would feel it. The only problem I had was a broken oil pump coupling, which may have already been broken. 1/2 square x 1/4 steel tube works great. 1" long. Tractor is running great!

Don't use the home made oil pump coupler. Deere designed the coupler to break if ice or anything gets into the pump. I fixed one for my neighbor that had a solid coupler in it. It wrecked both the oil pump and the camshaft. Go to Deere and get the right one.

Thanks! I had been wondering about that. Will be getting the right one on the next trip to The JD dealer.

Wow-- Jim you are doing it right-- I had entertained that thought-- but ended up using a hydraulic jack to turn the flywheel-- now I have the concern you mentioned--Did I destroy the valves??-- A first time for me-- I think I should have come here first and talked to the experienced people BEFORE trying to turn it. I have a few more things to check before fireing it but hope to do it soon-- The oil preasure in very good- Running in the area of 25# cranking, This one is a 1948 A, It got a soaking some time-- but was said to have been stored inside, Think I was fooled since the Left cylinder had been watered down enough to rust the spark plug shut. Did it have coolant in it? You may want to check for leaks into the cylinder, bad gasket or (shudder)a cracked block or head. This one had set insside for 7 0r 8 years, the owner just didn't need it.

Jim---- Luck was on my side in that area-- it was full of antifreeze. I suspect it sat out side contrary to what the seller said, I suspect there is a big gaping hole on the top side of the air tube under the hood. Posibly the stack has been hit and forced back straight, they tell me that opens them up-- Will remove the hood soon an then I will see what is hideing under there. Every thing on this tractor has water damage, Brakes, Starter, Cylinders, Carburator, Clutch, and who knows what I will find next-- Probably water in the transmision too, planned to draining it but have not since it has turned so cold. May get the keroseen heater blowing on it tomorrow and see what comes out. Mr.B

Pull the gear cover off of the oil pump. Water can accumulate there and freeze and cause what may be termed "difficulties". I Think that is what happened with this one, the last time the owner tried to start it. When I pulled the cover off, I got about a cup of water out of it. At the time it was not cold enough to freeze, So I don't think I broke the coupling when I freed the engine.
