I am in the process of a rebuild on a JD 401b industrial diesel tractor. I believe the 2440 farm tractor has the same engine. The rear seal and wear ring are made together now. I have never seen this before. Naturally it takes a special JD tool to install the seal, and wear ring. Has any one had any luck installing the seal without the special tool. I have no problem installing theseal by it's self, but with the crank wear ring built into the seal it looks like a good place for a screw up if not done correctly. Appreciate any input Stan

The wear sleeve and outer seal should NEVER be separated. You're just asking for leaks. Beg, borrow or rent the proper tool and you'll have that seal installed in 2 minutes.

Before buying tool, I used to press wear ring on, evenly drawing up flywheel, then install seal. Hy-Capacity sell the tool.

I have had good luck so far installing those seals without the special tool by driving the inner wear ring and seal in slowly, squarely, and at the same time so they are never taken apart. If you can get the tool it is much better. The wear ring has to go on slightly farther than the inset on the flywheel and the seal is centered on the ring. Now that I have said this the next one I do should leak like a sieve

To do it correctly, you need the seal tool.Otherwise the wear ring can become distorted or not set to the proper depth.Whatever you do don't take the seal/wear ring apart.See if your Deere dealer will let you rent it or borrow it.Or maybe haul the shortblock to them and let them push the seal on.It's an awful lot of work to split the tractor a second time to replace the seal correctly.

Some dealers will let you rent/borrow their tool if they know you. Or maybe at least let you get some measurements so you can make one. I made one for the 4020 seals just used a large piece of pipe and machined the dia. and a step in it. Not much machineing.
