I always pull the block a put them in from the back side and then put the whole thing in as a assembly

The 1st JD tractor I learned on had a power block and that was the ONLY way. That is the way I have done it every since, power block or not. I put them in "loaded".

That's fine if you have everything apart and all the sheetmetal off. But these tractors were made to pull the head and block for service of normal wear and tear without tearing too much apart.

Since when do you have to take the sheetmetal off to get the block out?

The guys that are pulling them with the pistons and rods all in are going to have to. Ain't no way your going to pull the block in a pressed frame A or B and leave the pistons and rods in without tearing alot of other stuff out of the way.

If it is like the unstyled B the cyl. is stepped you just squeeze them by hand and start them in and then the tapered ramp inside will guide them in. I just bump it in with a rubber hammer.

They were designed that way on purpose so you could easily work on them with little tools. Something long ago forgotten in todays machines.
