I went to start my 70 D the other day and the pony motor will not turn the fly wheel. Last fall when I parked there were no signs of a weak clutch, the cluch is also adjusted right
according to the manual specs. It appears that there is some oil looking debris inside the housing of the pinion gear ect. I can not decide what to do next, tear into it or is there a simple way to try to aleveate this trouble. If I do have to tear into this, how big of a project is it

Thank in advance

I just worked on my 70 that did same and found that the oil in pony trans was very watery and just changed oil and cleaned up [arts and works fine again.

Or maybe the overrunning clutch part of the pony's sliding drive pinion is now slipping instead of driving?

I had to repair two O/R clutches on 70's, and both of them made a crunching noise as they kicked the rollers out of engagement, then a clunk as they caught again. If he has any peculiar noises, that could point to the O/R clutch.

Let's hope that he just needs to add length to the linkage rods to push the clutch facing in and the pinion out. Maybe he could hose it down with a high quality spray brake cleaner containing perchlorethylene so that it removes the grease and doesn't leave a residue behind. If there's any oil on the facings and pressure plate, it might help it to regain some friction.

jlow...pull the flywheel cover and determine if the gear on the pony transmission is engaging with the ring gear on the flywheel. If not, you need to clean the sliding surfaces and adjust the linkages. If the gear is engaged, but it will not turn the flywheel you need to adjust the three round tipped bolts on the clutch housing. If that does not work, then you'll have to pull the pony engine and replace the clutch friction disc. That's a much bigger job than the first two possibilities.

Where does one get these clutch disks for pony motors?

Joel...the clutch disk assembly is obsolete, but you can still buy the clutch facing and rivets from JD. Facings are about $21 each.
