I'm trying to remove rear wheels on a late A. I need to heat the rear hubs but afraid to heat too long being cast. how long do you usually heat them? do you just want to get them smoking? thanks for any help

you can heat cast hubs as long as you do it evenly. cast iron will take tremendous heat providing its distributed evenly. dont heat just one area doing so will cause the casting to crack

I heated and beat mine, tried to pull it with a hyd jack and never did get it. I cut it off and bought another one.

Since I have seen a simple puller in Green or Two Cylinder magazine that I think would work well. It is a heavy plate with holes to match 3 bolt holes in the hub. It goes on the end of the axle and the grade 8 bolts and nuts are tightened evenly to apply extreme pressure to pull the hub. If it is still stubborn when it gets flush with the end of the axle a spacer less than the size of the axle can be used. Penetrating oil and a little heat right at the 3 slot holes would help. The pulller could be made or I think someone is selling them. Maybe it is someone on this board.

Loosen the hub bolts drive or pull it around & jam the brakes that has always worked for me. Earl

they are a good 8-10 inches from seals, I haven't used a torch much but always heard that cast could crack when too hot. maybe hubs are a better alloy. I didn't know, just wanted to find out more before possibly ruining a hub.

I agree with bob. You can heat cast iron all you want and wont hurt it. How close are you to your axle seals. thats what you need to keep from getting to hot.

How do you figure you'll hurt the cast iron hubs with a little heat?

You'll "draw the temper out" of the steel axles before you'll hurt the cast iron hubs!
