Help-JD 310B fuel injector pump problem (Stansodyne model). I had a bad fuel leak at the fuel injector pump gasket. Looked to have 1 of the 3 bolts missing from the cover plate. Found the bolt was broken and atfter drilling and tapping, placed the cover back with all three bolts securing it to the housing. Started up the engine and ran for approx 10 seconds and died. Tried cracking the fuel fittings to bleed off air, but still turns over and dies after 1-2 seconds. Any ideas?

ps - here is a link to the part. Put 310B in for the model and Alphabetical Search to F. Go to first link for fuel injector pump(there are 10 for fuel injector pump).

Bob - have the check valve out, did not see any spring when disassembled. the glass ball seems to be jammed at the bottom port (inlet). The flats where the I wrenched the valve out were rounded, so it looks to be have worked on before (I just bought the 310B last summer - used of course).
Anyway I have been working around the edge of glass balland did pull some small bits of debris. I will continue working around the ball, I think there may be more stuff jammed in there, just concerned that no spring was found.

The spring is ABOVE the glass ball.

Deere had a problem for a few years with those little bolts seizing in the top cover. We had some brand-new machines that had them stuck. It seemed to be mostly with the yellow industrial equipment. We had a recall one year - on new equipment that required us to remove the inj. pump top covers - and with many - the bolts would snap - even with heat appllied. Drilling out that little steel bolt in an aluminum housing is not to easy - considering you got it done - is too your credit. If you have to fix the internals of your pump, you can eliminate the plastic part - forever - for an extra $35. When those style pumps were used in automotive applications, the plastic piece (weight retainer dampener) was totally eliminated in 1985 and an EID was used instead. We had a Stanadyne-certified pump shop at several Deere dealerships - but we often bought our parts directly through Deere - the prices were better that way. But, I think Deere totally discontinued selling the parts. I've been using Spaco replacement parts for years - and they've been fine. You can buy any Roosamaster or Stanadyne part you want - cheap - through U.S. Diesel at 800-328-0037

There is a return fitting/pressure regulating valve screwed into the cover you were working with.

If this fitting/valve gets clogged (often with "coffee grounds looking stuff") from the governor's plastic damper ring, the pump will shut down as soon as housing pressure builds up.

Take the COMPLETE fitting/valve out, and look for crud jammed in it. If there are parts of the governor ring in there, cleaning out the valve is a temporary fix, as it will clog again.

Once the plastic ring disintegrates to a certain point, metal parts in the governor start to rattle against each other... NOT good.

You can start the tractor for a short period of time, being careful, as diesel fuel will be trickling out of the IP, and verify that it will run.

Also, any other restriction in the fuel return system between the pump and the tank will have the same effect... the IP (and the engine) will shut down after a few seconds.

Bob - thanks for the reply. There may have been some metal chips from drilling out the bolt (tried to keep the reserviour clean by putting tissue paper in it - some chips may have gotten by). This return fitting/pressure regulating valve you are talking about - is it the black rubber cylinder mounted under the cover and sits down in the reserviour? I can not find any reference to it on the parts site I had linked.

Key #9... Part # R36535... There is a spring-loaded glass check ball in the fitting/valve.

Got it Bob, you hit the nail on the head! Cleaned the ball valve to work freely and fired right up. after about 4 hours of running, she starved out. I pulled the check valve and it was clogged with "coffee grounds". Looks like I will check into my other responders option for a replacement part. Thanks again
