I am working on a JD B belonging to a friend and neighbor. Have it running good,except that under no load or light load conditions, it hunts or surges. The carb has been rebuilt and the governor linkage is free(no binding) and is adjusted to 1/2 hole short of entering the throttle in the wide open position per JD specs.Adjusting the load and idle needles has no effect except to kill it when closed too far. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Jim pull the bowl off the Carb. Remove the bottom brass screw and look inside the hole. See of the very small passage is open in to the venture. You might think that the screw is to alloy access to the passage that runs down the main body of the carb. There is a small hole that lets the fuel into this passage that need to be open. Check it real close.

Jim, There are two little holes in carb bore, one in front & one just behind the throttle plate.(some carbs have 3 or4) These are for slow idle and to let in more fuel as they are uncovered, (when the throttle is opened) make sure they are open. There is a plug in the side of carb across from them to allow access with a small SOFT wire. These holes go into the idle passage. Also make sure the throttle shaft bushings are flush with the inside of throttle bore if they are not air will by-pass the throttle plate without picking up any fuel.

HI Don. I took the carb all apart, Cleaned all passages I could find, pulled all the little plug screws out and cleaned. Air blows through every thing I think it should. Maybe I need to do it again?

I worked on my 52 B this last year, and cleaned that carb three times before I got it to run right. One of the two screws that have to be taken out through to holes in the end finally had to be drilled out. Seems to run alright now. I soaked it for two weeks and than blew it out with air, and than sprayed some electrical cleaner through all the holes to see that it flowed freely. Also used a tip cleaner on the gas jet, and cleaned all those holes.. I hope this helps you. Good Luck, Don

That's what I am working on, a '52 B. I'll take it off and have at it again. the screws all come out easy, believe it or not! Thanks for your help-JIM

Did you take the main nozzle out and make sure all the little holes in it are clean. I always take all the plugs out, the nozzle, the springs off and tie a piece of wire on the carb body and dip the whole carb in muriactic acid, it eats all the rust out, don't leave in new acid more than an hour, and make sure you do it outside. after an hour remove the carb housing and give a thorough rinse with water. then dry with compressed air. after its dry , spray the inside with penetrating oil to protect it from rusting before use. give the outside a coat of primer or paint after the plugs are installed. it will work like its supposed to.
