Has any one tried to use a modern lip seal for a replacement axle seal for a standard GP #214461. If not how do I fix the oil leak. Thanks for any help or ideals ,David

4020,

I have made the following modifications to the rear axle seals and spline shaft seals on a couple of GP's to reduce the oil leakage at both the rear axles and into the brake drums with considerable success.

Rear Axle – Chicago Rawhide CR 30095 – The dimensions of the seal are 4.500” o.d. x 3.000” i.d. The opening in the final drive housing measures 4.400” therefore it needs to be milled 0.100” for the seal to fit. It has to be milled into the housing at least far enough to accept the width of the seal plus the first flange on the end of the axle closest to where the wheel bolts on (approx. Ύ” total).

Spline shaft felts – CR 20079 – These should fit without any modification to the housing. They fit into the housing and seal against the outside of the hub in the center of the brake drum where it slides on the spline shaft. Some install the oil seal into the housing sufficiently to place a felt seal on the outside to still give it that original appearance.

Spline shaft bearing – MRC 308MZ – The original design consists of a thin washer which is installed prior to the bearing that is open on both sides. The thinking was probably that the washer would prevent the oil from continuing down the spline shaft toward the brake. It rarely works. Replace the washer and bearing with the above bearing that is sealed on one side. The sealed side should be installed into the opening first. After the combination of the sealed bearing and oil seal, I have only had very minor leakage since.

Feel free to send me your email address if you have any more questions.
