I was given a JD 272 grooming mower that requires some (many) repairs before I can use. What is a source for a parts manual for the 272?

Hello out there. Thanks for all of your inputs. The bearings on the front wheels are completely gone and the deck is in a mess with rust but may be fixable. It was left as is many years ago with grass and dirt crammed under the top case. Thus, much rust. Thanks again.

treeman:

The guys told you how to find a book and the parts, but you are in luck as the parts book is also on the web on JDPARTS. I have a "72" the belly-mounted equivalent of your 272. I think only the gear box which steps up the speed is really different, and maybe the pulleys, just not sure without some study. The spindles are pretty straight forward, and the bearings are pretty affordable. Just don't try to use it like a bush-hog style rotary mower as the steel deck shell is just too light for that. I've rebuilt mine a few times, and have now worn through the deck for the last time. I have a new shell in the shop that I will build up with all new spindles that I found on eBay, along with new sheeves and pulleys. I figured I'd be ahead that way compared to the over $3,000 for a new unit!?!

Where did you find a manual for the JD 272 under jdpart.com? I logged in there but could not find anything on the 272.

It's in the left column there "parts catalog" and takes you to the link I gave earlier for parts catalogs and once there enter your model number. If the mower deck model doesn't come up enter the tractor model number and accessories should come up listed under it also.

Ok, I just knew some of the little front loaders for them won't pop up unless you enter the tractor model.

Manuals in my DB1112 book (it's an old 1991 manual of manuals) shows:

Operator's manuals (dependent on S/N):

OMM83560 (45001-525000
OMM89615 (525001-537000)
OMM75851 (537001-UP)

Technical Manual: TM1251 (All Serial numbers)

Parts Catalog: PC1268

If you go to JDParts.com and click on the words "John Deere Parts Catalog", it will take you to a screen where you can type in the model 272, and it will lead you to an online catalog. If you register, you can get prices as well as dealer availability.

You can go to www.deere.com and sign up for a parts account. There you can view all tractors and equipment from 1960 and up.
