The hydraulic pump failed on my JD301A and pretty much self destructed. What should I do to clean out the system and would you recommend a clean out filter if they even make one for this machine. My friend said it is a filter with super small microns that will catch metal, etc.

sorry for this post since i have no idea what kind of tractor this is , but my first thought was i wonder if there is any where to put a magnet into the system to help catch some of the metal pieces. also i would put in some kerosene and a filter, run the tractor for a few minutes and then drain the fluid out and change the filter. i might even consider doing this twice depending on what the fluid looked like the first time you drain it out. if you work it much i know i would consider changing it again after a couple of hours running time. sounds expensive, but another new pump sounds even worse. what happened to the old pump? i used some fluid in my ih tractor once and it ate the linings off the clutch pack for the pto drive. it was valvoline trany fluid. i was told not to use it and did any way. (hay on the ground and no other fluid available) good luck

Isn't the 301 the same as a 1020? In which case there is a plug on the side at the bottom of the rearend housing that comes out using a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar. That is a long plastic framed if you will, metal screen. I wouldn't say that it is REAL fine, but quite and will filter out quite a lot. If that plug will come out,I'd sure pull it out of there and clean it.
