My JD 401b industrial hydraulic pump is making some sounds I know are not right. When I raise the lift arms the noise goes away some, then returns. I changed the filter and cleaned the screen, and did not see one speck of metal. I purchased this tractor not running, so I don't know the history of the pump. Can a kit be purchased for these pumps? I believe this tractor has the same pump as the 2440 farm tractor. Thanks for any help. Stan

I am not familiar with this model tractor, or which style pump it uses, but I have experienced this noise before on a 4010 and also a 1020. Under the troubleshooting section in the technical manual, they suggest that there is air trapped in the stroke control housing. On both the 4010 and 1020 that I mentioned, I was able to get rid of the noise by loosening the plug opposite the stroke control adjusting screw while tractor is running, to release the trapped air.

It may just be that the canister (can not remember right name for it) in the hydraulic system need recharged. Do you feel a vibration in the control handle? The canister I am talking about is to keep them rotary ppiston pumps at an even pressure so they dont rattle.

The rattling noise you hear are from the pump coupler on the splines if everything else is tight..Just a common noise on these machines..I wouldn't loose any sleep on this problem..Eventually the pump will quit turning because the splines on the cast coupler have stripped out..Most times the splines on the pump shaft are ok..Nothing is going to go through the radiator..When you replace the coupler , neverseize the heck out of it on the splines....

Possibly the stroke control valve in the pump is bypassing slightly,or you have a slight internal leak in the hydraulic system that is causing the hydraulic pump to stroke(pump) slightly to make up for the leak which causes the chatter noise you are hearing

The coupler has new rubber bushings, and a good coupler clamp just installed. When I got the tractor the bushings were shot, wearing into the clamp. Stan

Could be either the pump of the front of the engine when the coupler was so messed up. What condition is the balancer in?
