I have a JD B with a cast iron frame and I am trying to figure out what year it is. I found the S/N tag, but it is rusted and I can't read it, other than where is says John Deere.
Does anyone know what I can do to clean it up so that I can read it without destroying it in the process?

I have had great success using pure Acetone, which is the primary ingredient of Nail Polish Remover. Soak for a couple minutes and work around with a Q-Tip. Wipe off and repeat this process. If any numbers still exist, they will show using this method.

Any type of abrasive action will damage or destroy the numbers

Jeremy; Take a small piece of 4-0 or 3-0 steel wool and lightly rub the tag, just so it's clean. Tape a small piece of paper over the plate and rub with a soft lead pencil or charcoal stick. It should give you the numbers so you can find your answers !
Good luck ! Jim B.
