Why did John Deere use grade 5 bolts on its Industrial 440 ICD instead of grade 8. It seems every bolt that you try to take off, will twist off on this machine.

I used to work on Cats and they used grade 8 bolts and you still twisted them off. It depends upon what the tractor was used for and the conditions it was in. My uncle had a chicken farm and I swear the fumes from the manure was like loc tite. Some fertilizer chemicals seem to do the same. At least Deere used the grade 5 instead of softer ones. On the other hand they are a lot easier to drill out than the grade 8.

i can"t answer your question except that with repeatedly going from hot to cold and being exposed to every kind of abuse from just daily use may have weakened the bolts. i can offer a trick or two that works for me on hard bolts to remove. heat always helps. sometimes after heating you can stick a chunk of parrafin down against the bolt or nut while it real hot and the parrafin will run down in the threads and help lubricate the threads making the bolt come out easier. the best suggestion i can make is for you to retighten the bolt once its starts coming out. screwing it back in breaks the rust up someway and will help carry any lubricate you"ve put on the bolt on down futher into the threads. good luck.
