4010 diesel fuel gauge

I got a replacement fuel gauge and sending unit for my 4010 JD diesel which was converted to a negative ground 12 volt system. When I read the install instructions for the gauge, it noted that the gauge was for positive ground system.

One thought was that I could simply reverse the ground so that I wired the negative post to ground and the positive post to the ignition live wire. However, it occurs to me that that would make the gauge work backwards, or worse yet, it could damage the sending unit.

Does anyone out there have any experience dealing with the problem I have? I would think it would be fairly common when the conversion from a positive ground 24 volt sytem is converted to a 12 volt system? Thanks for any help.

I have run into this problem also. I have found that a gauge and sending unit from a late 4020, with a 12V system will fix your problem. The reason that you have to change the sender, is to match the sender resistance to the replacement gauge, to make it register correctly.

I had the same problem for my 3020 D that I converted to 12Vneg as I didn't think it would have made a difference like switching wires on an amp meter. Decided to take the gauge back and get one for 12v neg and it worked but had to really butcher the back holddown plate as the gauge was far from the same size of the original.

Deere has made a bunch of "subs" on those gauges, and apparently they're mixed up on what "subs", as to ground polarity.

"Jim in Alaska" (JimAK) went through this a while back and posted some part numbers. You MAY (GOOD LUCK with the "SEARCH" on THIS site) find it in the archives, or you could post for him over on the KL Board, and ask him. I can't remember if he wanted a(+) ground gauge, and got a (-) ground gauge, or vice-versa, but he eventually figured out which gauges were sold as the 'wrong" polarity.
